Spectacolul de la Bulandra isi propune sa comenteze cele trei niveluri teatrale ale piesei lui Carlo Gozzi in dialog cu opera lui Puccini. Sursa teatrala cea mai profunda, dincolo de motivul literar persan al celor 1001 de nopti, patrunde intr-un spatiu mitologic, fabulos, si sugereaza avataruri si biografii ale personajelor. Opera chineza Beijing si commedia dell’arte se ciocnesc intr-o in-fruntare a sistemelor traditionale codificate, asiatice si europene. Ca reper mitologic, Turandot pare nascuta din zeita tibetana Kalidurda, acea trista patroana matriarhala a sacrificiilor masculine prin decapitare, ea insasi decapitata de zeii invidiosi, apoi coplesiti de remuscare, care-i lipesc capul celest pe trupul fara cap al unei prostituate josnice. Kalidurda va fi intotdeauna sfisiata – este cu-vintul invocat cel mai des de Turandot – intre aspiratia spirituala catre absolut si mizeria poftelor umane reprimate care se razbuna. Turandot devine un personaj shakespearian cu aspecte tragice, un fel de Richard al II-lea sau un Hamlet care raspunde la intrebare prin alegerea dincolo de bine si de rau. Razboiul sexelor si razboiul creierelor – Nietzsche si Strindberg. Ultimul nivel al spectacolului e actualitatea. Turandot este un personaj extrem de actual, extrem de periculos, ca si Altoum, batrinul imparat senil, care joaca rolul unui discipol al lui Confucius, intelept si blind. Sub masca lui se ascunde insa viclenia si tenacitatea…
